County Clerk Information

The Clerk is an elected official who performs as an officer of the court, the manager of court information, and the chief financial officer for all revenues collected on behalf of the court.

In Indiana, the Clerk is also the official who oversees and conducts all elections, as a member of the Election Board. The Clerk is responsible to administer and certify results for all federal, state, county, township, municipal, special and school board elections.

Where to Apply
Indiana residents must obtain a marriage license in the county in which at least one of them resides. Out of State residents must obtain a marriage license in the county in which the marriage will be performed. Marriage licenses are by appointment only, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm. Please call 219-866-5297 to schedule your appointment. We are located on the 1st floor of the Jasper County Courthouse in the Microfilm Department. Please note that you must first go online at: https://courts.in.gov/marriage to start your marriage license before coming to the Courthouse.

Age Requirements
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Applicants age 16 and 17 must have a court order.

Blood Test
It is no longer necessary for the women to provide proof of immunity to rubella.

Fees
If at least one of the applicants is a resident of Jasper County, the fee is $29.00 cash or money order at the time of application. If both applicants are Non-residents of Indiana, the fee is $69.00 cash or money order at the time of application.

Identification
Applicants must show a valid drivers license. If the applicant is not a licensed driver, a state-issued identification card, original birth certificate, military I.D. or passport may be accepted.

Marriage Ceremony
Persons Authorized to Solemnize Marriages (IC 31-11-6-1)

Sec. 1. Marriages may be solemnized by any of the following:

  • A member of the clergy of a religious organization (even if the cleric does not perform religious functions for an individual congregation), such as a minister of the gospel, a priest, a bishop, an archbishop, or a rabbi.
  • A judge.
  • A mayor, within the mayor's county.
  • A clerk or a clerk-treasurer of a city or town, within a county in which the city or town is located.
  • A clerk of the circuit court.
  • The Friends Church, in accordance with the rules of the Friends Church.
  • The German Baptists, in accordance with the rules of their society.
  • The Bahai faith, in accordance with the rules of the Bahai faith.
  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in accordance with the rules of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
  • An imam of a masjid (mosque), in accordance with the rules of the religion of Islam.

Waiting Period & Expiration

Waiting Period
A marriage license can be issued on the same day of application. There is no legal waiting period to obtain your marriage license and no witnesses are required. Once issued, a marriage license is valid for sixty days from the date of issuance during which time the marriage must be performed.

Previous Marriage
If there have been previous marriages, the application requires information on the month, year and manner (e.g. divorce, death, annulment) in which the last marriage ended.

Effective February 1, 2008 the Jasper County Clerk's office is no longer a passport acceptance facility. Acceptance facilities in Jasper County are the Rensselaer Post Office and the Demotte Post Office.
