GUIDELINES FOR THE APPLICATION OF A CIVIL PROTECTIVE ORDER
There are 3 areas in which a protective order may be granted:
1. Intimate partner protection (protects people from domestic or family violence, stalking, or a sex offense);
-OR-
2. Child protection (filed on behalf of a child to protect them from family violence, stalking, or a sex offense);
-OR-
3. Work place violence (filed by the employer of a person who is the target of unlawful violence or credible threats of violence).
You must meet one of these criteria to be eligible to apply for a civil protective order.
The person asking for the Order is called the “Petitioner”. The Petitioner files a petition in Court against the other person, who is called the “Respondent”.
IN ORDER TO FILE A CASE, YOU MUST HAVE THE RESPONDENT’S:
1. Correct name; AND
2. Correct date of birth OR Social Security Number AND
3. Correct, current address.
If you meet one of the guidelines and have the information needed, you may obtain a protective order form from the Court Administrator during normal office hours.
